InterFraternity Council Chapter Updates

Alpha Epsilon Pi

This Sunday, March 29th, the Phi-Delta chapter of AEPi will be hosting its first annual charity softball tournament!  The proceeds from this event will go to a charity of the IFC’s choice, as well as Shaare Zedek, a multi-ethnic children’s hospital in Jerusalem.  We want to thank the fraternities that have committed to playing in this charity event, as well as all the donors and sponsors who have made this tournament possible!

In addition, all the members of AEPi are thrilled that our Formal is coming up on April 10th –12th in Niagara Falls, Canada.  The formal itself will take place in the Skylon tower overlooking the scenic falls, where we will enjoy each other’s company, and celebrate the forthcoming graduation of our seniors.

Delta Phi

Delta Phi is proud to announce we participated in Greek Sing for the first time in 4 or 5 years.  Understandably this is not that much of an accomplishment to most but it continues on our new culture of becoming more involved.  We did not place but we had a great time doing it.  Our Alumni Golf Outing is on Friday, April 10th.  This is the first year that the active members are organizing and running the event.  We also have had some success with our first official alumni newsletter.  We have received great feedback and are very excited to continue new and long due relations with our alumni.

Pi Kappa Alpha

Pi Kappa Alpha will be hosting the 1st Annual Richard W. Noble Memorial Wiffle Ball Tournament at the Cathedral Lawn on Saturday, April 11th from noon to five PM. The cost per team is $50, which is due the day of the tournament prior to competing. The deadline to register a team will be Tuesday, April 7th at midnight. The tournament is being held in memory and honor of Rich Noble, a brother of Pi Kappa Alpha who we tragically lost due to burn complications stemming from a fire to his Mckee Place apartment in the Fall of 2006. Proceeds will benefit the United States Burn Support Organization, which happens to be based in Philadelphia. The organization coordinates with Camp Susquehanna in Lancaster, a camp for burn victims between ages 7-16.

Sigma Alpha Epsilon

Sigma Alpha Epsilon, along with the sisters of delta zeta, recently held their 2nd annual dunk tank on the William Pitt union lawn. All proceeds were donated to the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank.

SAE is also in the midst of their Paddy Murphy Week, which is celebrated by all chapters across the country. This is a week-long series of events and rituals designed to send off the graduating seniors in style.

Sigma Chi

This has been an incredibly successful semester for the Beta Theta chapter of Sigma Chi, especially in terms of alumni involvement and brother morale.  We have orchestrated a number of brotherhood events that allowed for both undergraduate and alumni members and there is rather full schedule of events planned for the coming months, leading into our 100th anniversary at the University of Pittsburgh in November.  Working closely with our housing corporation, as well as the tremendous donations of our graduated members, we have finalized plans for a dramatic renovation of our first floor, focusing mainly on our chapter room and kitchen.   We also continue to publish a quarterly alumni newsletter in order to keep everyone up-to-date with all of our activities and future plans, while reconnecting members who may have fallen out of contact over the years. Overall, our excitement is palpable as we anxiously prepare for the future months.

Sigma Phi Epsilon

On the chapter level, we have participated and placed in a number of charity events. Namely: in 2007, 2008, and 2009 we entered teams into Race to Anyplace, a stationary bike race which benefits cancer research, where we took first and second place in 2007 and 2008, respectively. Also in 2007 and 2008, we have participated in the collegiate team division of The Great Race, again taking first place both years in the fraternity division.

The Brothers of PA Gamma have been very active this semester in both Greek Week, and in the community at large. With the Chi Omega sorority, we raised over $400 in three days for the Make a Wish Foundation tabling in the Litchfield Towers Lobby. We sent a group of 11 brothers to sell Christmas trees for charity at the Oakland School for the Blind. Also, we sold Santa Hats in the Towers Lobby with the sisters of Alpha Delta Pi to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House. The staple of our volunteering effort this year, however, came from Pitt Make A Difference Day, or PMADD. The pilot year of this program included 20 SigEps who came to volunteer within the community. Our main group was sent to a derelict playground in Oakland to pick up trash; while other brothers were sent to other locations throughout Oakland to participate in similar activities. All of our efforts will culminated with Pitt Dance Marathon in the spring semester, in which brother Richard Yun was a dancer.

On the individual level, we also have a number of other brothers that deserve recognition for their personal achievements. Brothers Michael Boggs and Yanni Hronas graduated from Officer Candidate School of the United States Marine Corps over the past summer. Brother Zach Miller placed second place nationally in Fight Gone Bad III, a charity competition based on a CrossFit work out that benefits the Wounded Warriors project. Lastly, Brother Levi Naiditch is volunteering his time and talents to fight for the Israeli Defense Force.

Another new chapter asset, Chris Gassman, comes to us from the highly successful Colorado Alpha chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon in Boulder. Pursuing a JD/MBA joint degree, he is a first year law student at The University of Pittsburgh School of Law, and will be beginning an MBA program next fall at Carnegie Mellon University Tepper School of Business. Chris has traveled the world, with the start of that journey thanks in part to the legendary Tragos Quest to Greece, the acclaimed and prestigious final step in the SigEp Leadership Continuum. Chris has also had the distinct honor of being named a Sigma Phi Epsilon Fellow, the highest achievement recognized within the Balanced Man Program, at the 2005 Grand Chapter Conclave. Mr. Gassman has already provided the executive board with an unquantifiable amount of guidance, while guiding the chapter in valuable goal setting exercises. He has become a true mentor to all of the brothers at the Pennsylvania Gamma Chapter.

Recruitment has been on a roll, with a combined 28 new members in the past three rushes. Our Balanced Man Program has carried us from the paradigm of a traditional chapter to a non-hazing chapter, thanks to the work and dedication of past and present executive boards.

Tau Epsilon Phi

We are looking forward to hosting a parent’s weekend golf outing on the 18th of April at Hickory Heights G.C. We proudly initiated 6 new members into our fraternity earlier this month and are looking forward to even greater numbers this upcoming Fall semester. Lastly, we enjoyed our Spring formal at Bahama Breeze, located in Robinson, PA.  Nearly all attended with their dates and the night proved to be one that will be a lasting memory.

Zeta Beta Tau

Over the last few months the Brothers of Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity have kept busy with philanthropic events, and also with events within the entire Greek community at the University of Pittsburgh. In February, we, along with the sisters of Chi Omega, organized and ran a successful clothing drive, the proceeds of which went to benefit the Salvation Army here in the Southside of Pittsburgh. Additionally, Chi Omega and ZBT both partnered up for Pitt's Greek Sing; during the two months leading up to the event, the brothers and sisters involved in the routine occupied themselves with biweekly practices, and also worked together on the scenery for the performance. The experience helped to initiate friendships between the two organizations, and everyone involved simply had a great time in the process. In regards to other Greek Week events, Andrew Smith, a brother of Zeta Beta Tau, reigned victorious in the Greek Week Jeopardy competition!

With a newly elected Executive Board, Zeta Beta Tau hopes to improve upon the successes of this past academic year. The brothers are anticipating their organization’s annual National Convention and Leadership School in July of this summer in Cleveland, Ohio.
